Activity 3: The Hoosier Group
By the 20th century a group of artists, known as the Hoosier Group, studied abroad and returned to Indiana to teach other Indiana artists, some of whom became part of the Brown County Art Colony. PORTRAITS were especially important before the invention of the camera. Often, famous people would have their PORTRAITS painted and objects that were important to them were included in the picture. This was another way of recording history. T.C. Steele's portrait of James Whitcomb Riley is particularly well-known.
Build Your Own Portrait
In this activity, draw a picture, PORTRAIT, of yourself. After you have finished, draw a few objects that are important to you, for example, a pet, a sport , or a hobby.
