Activity 2: Statehood Emerging Refinement

After Indiana became a state, there was an emerging refinement among the people of Indiana to have beautiful things in their homes. Crafts, such as quilts, were popular for their usefulness as well as their beauty. Quilts are usually made to cover beds. You may also see them on sofas or hanging on walls. Quilts are made by sewing two pieces of material together. In pioneer days, people came together to make quilts while having a "work party". This party was called a "quilting bee". The colors and shapes of quilts added beauty to their homes and warm coverings for their beds.

Try it yourself!

Let's venture into quilting to learn GEOMETRY. Look at this Amish quilt (left) and it's geometric shapes. Find the squares, diamonds and triangles.
